Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) a cheaper alternative to Barium Fluoride has a unique feature in that it has small changes in refractive index at different wavelengths operating effectively in UV down to 130nm and up to 10 µm in the infrared.
Calcium Fluoride is used for a range of applications including vacuum ultra violet (below 200nm) being superior to UV Fused Silica in deep UV applications, having transmission greater than 75% between 0.15-9µm. Calcium Fluoride is approximately twice as hard as BaF2. Calcium Fluoride starts to soften at 600°C and is not affected under normal atmospheric conditions. At high temperatures Calcium Fluoride is vulnerable to thermal shock.
Used in ultra violet and infrared thermal imaging and traditionally used in apochromatic design to reduce light dispersion in IR doublet lenses for telescope and camera designs. As Calcium fluoride lenses have high damage threshold, low refractive index and low absorption they are ideal for Excimer lasers.
